The first stretch of coastline as you pass through the Straits of Gibraltar from the Atlantic is the Mediterranean coast of the Tangier/Tetouan region. This area has long been a popular area for holiday makers from within Morocco as well as France and is now the focus of much new property development in Morocco.

Known as “Morocco’s Golden Mile” the area of coast runs from the Spanish enclave of Ceuta past Marina Smir and the town of M’diq along the coast to Cabo Negro. As it has always been a popular tourist destination there are already a large number of touristic facilities and established housing. But now new plans are afoot and construction of a Waterpark, another golf course and a five star hotel will give the area extra prominence.

In the summer months the area is currently running at almost 100% capacity and rooms or rentals are extremely hard to find. Tourists are often joined by the King of Morocco who often summers here in his palace on the coast.

One of the longest established golf courses in Morocco is situated at Cabo Negro (opened in 1972) and the course runs parallel to the beach creating a tranquil green space. The front nine holes, which run by the seaside are tight with strategic bunkers and mainly straight fairways but the back nine holes open out into full view of the Rif mountains which is truly spectacular and there are some great holes.

In conjunction with the increasing number of properties in Kabila there are also extensive changes being made to the local infrastructure to enable it to accommodate greater tourist numbers. The airport in Tetouan has been identified as in need of improvement and the existing number of flights will be increased. A major improvement has been the new motorway linking the area to Tangiers, reducing the journey time to only 30 minutes.

From this area it’s easily possible to take a trip up to Chefchaouen and the Rif Mountains. Chefchaouen is a charming hill town reminiscent of the White villages just across the water in Andalucia, Spain, it’s white and blue two storey houses have been a favoured base for people wishing to explore and enjoy trekking holidays.
