Dubai - A 21st Century City State

Situated in southwest asia bordering Oman, Saudi Arabia and on the shores of the Persian gulf you will find the United Arab Emirates, once known as the Trucial states. Dubai is the second largest of these states, although eclipsed in size by Abu Dhabi, Dubai is undoubtedly the superstar of the emirates.

The name Dubai refers to the name of the emirate and its main city, sometimes referred to as Dubai city. Through the city flows the Dubai creek, running northwest to southwest separating Bur Dubai and Jumeirah from the Deira area. The two banks are linked with Al Shindagha Tunnel, the Floating Bridge, the Al Maktoum Bridge, the Al Garhoud Bridge and the Business Bay Crossing.

Although some areas retain their traditional charms the city is a predominantly westernised, infact a striking futuristic leisure and business metropolis. Head south of the city to find another world in the Margham desert and dunes.

Vibrant Economy attracts investment

Similar to the rest of the UAE, Dubai was an arid wasteland. The dicovery of oil, around 30 years ago, brought with iit enormous wealth fo rth region. However realising that the oil reserves could run dry by 2030, Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid al Maktoum, Dubai’s leader from 1990 – 2006, masterminded a vision that would secure his emirates long term prosperity.

Due to this vision Dubai’s economy is no longer dependant on oil. . In 2006, the emirate's GDP was US$46b; only 3% of the total revenue came from oil and natural gas. The main causes for this success has been commerce and tourism. Millions of tourists have been attracted to stay in the sumptous hotels by attractions such as the world's biggest indoor ski slope, the giant Mall of the Emirates and wonderful water parks.

The government have planned the city to incorporate specific “free zones” such as such as Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City and Dubai Sports City. The attractive tax free regime has brought many multinational firms to the emirate. Dubai Healthcare City is also on the cards, which it is hoped will encourage an increase in medical tourism. With a population that has grown by 50% to 1.5m and that figure set to contribute soaring, property in Dubai is now also a driving force behind the economy.

Forward Looking and stable Government

The Maktoum family, led by the current ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, have now ruled over the emirate for almost 170 years. While Dubai enjoys individual jurisdiction over certain aspects such as local facilities and law enforcement, many of the larger functions are decided through the emirates' federal framework. However, more times than not, Dubai gets its own way as, along with just Abu Dhabi, it has the power to veto any decisions of national importance and, handily, Sheikh Mohammed is also the Prime Minister and Vice President of the UAE.
